ESMI is a an 8-week summer program during which participants enroll in a summer math class (MATH 1920, 2930 or 2940) and participate in a research project. Rising sophomores have the opportunity to work on an applied math research project, which give them the opportunity to work in small teams on a project that is of a mathematical and computational nature. Rising juniors have the opportunity to conduct research with faculty in their intended major. Throughout the summer, students also participate in peer facilitated workshops to support their course work. At the end of the summer, all ESMI participants present their work at the Cornell LSAMP & McNair Research Symposium.Requirements:
- Must be rising Sophomores or Juniors in the College of Engineering at Cornell University
- Must be available to be on Campus for the entire duration of the program
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is a first generation college student (neither parent has a four year degree) and/or from a background traditional underrepresented in engineering (African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Native Pacific Islander and Native Alaskan)
- Priority consideration is given to those students who must take or retake a summer math course in order to stay on track for affiliation

- Tuition is provided for the summer math course
- $2000 research stipend provided to each participant
- On campus housing will be provided
