Diversity Programs in Engineering's (DPE) Annual Awards Banquet each spring honors the academic success of students as well as acknowledges the students and faculty who are making a difference within the college.
Award recipients will be selected by the number of nominations received in conjunction with qualitative examples of their deeds and efforts provided in the nomination and verification by DPE. Award recipients will be named at the DPE Annual Awards Banquet dinner.

Freshmen of the Year
This award recognizes a freshman that has regularly participated in DPE events, is an active member within a student organization, and made significant contributions to that organization. Additionally, this freshman awardee supported fellow students through academic, professional and/or personal issues and demonstrated consistent professional behavior and leadership within the past year. Finally, the recipient maintained good academic standing.
Undergraduate Excellence in Leadership Award
While maintaining good academic standing, the sophomore, junior, or senior recipient participated in DPE events, served as an active member within a student organization, and made significant contributions to that organization. Further, this honoree supported fellow students through academic, professional and/or personal issues and demonstrates consistent professional behavior and leadership within the past year.
Undergraduate Student of the Year
This award is not about superlative academic performance or holding leadership positions. This award recognizes an undergraduate student who has made a significant contribution to DPE, the College of Engineering, or the lives of others. This award recipient issomeone who may have done something innovative, bold, shown bravery, or positively contributed to the college's climate toward diversity.
CU EMPOWER AWARDS
Outstanding Peer Protégé Award
This award is presented to a CU EMPower peer protege as made outstanding efforts to go beyond merely regularly participating. This recipient demonstrated a commitment to self-development and the group mentoring process. The award recipient is a protege through their CU EMPower experience is poised to become a peer mentor.
Outstanding Peer Mentor Award
This award recognizes a CU EMPower peer mentor who has exhibited exceptional mentorship of new undergraduates. Moreover, the recipient is a peer mentor who demonstrated excellence in team building, interpersonal interaction and academic assistance, serving as a resource to the group as a whole, and commitment to the group mentoring process.
Graduate Student of the Year
This award is not about superlative academic performance or holding leadership positions. This award recognizes a graduate and an undergraduate student who has made a significant contribution to DPE, the College of Engineering, or the lives of others. This award recipient is someone who may have done something innovative, bold, shown bravery, or positively contributed to the college's climate toward diversity.
First Year Graduate Student of the Year
This award recognizes a first year graduate student that has regularly participated in DPE events, is a contributing member in an engineering student organization, and has positively impacted or supported fellow peers.
Robert Mozia Graduate Distinguished Service Award
Awarded in memory of Robert Mozia, a Ph.D. student in Biomedical Engineering, who was extremely committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers,dedicated a significant amount of energy to engaging in outreach activities, and who took pride in developing a close-knit community at Cornell.
This award is presented to a graduate student who has made outstanding contributions through their efforts to reach out to the community beyond the University by applying their skills, knowledge and experiences related to their graduate education. This award recipient may have also advanced the interests of graduate engineering students or demonstrated a genuine commitment to serving their department and/or the College of Engineering.
Graduate Excellence in Leadership Award
This award honors a graduate student who has positively impacted their department, the college, or other Cornell student community while holding a leadership position within a College of Engineering or other graduate student organization. This award recipient is a leader who has motivated, guided, and supported their engineering organization or other campus student organizations by trusting and working effectively with their colleagues, honoring the contributions of every member of the organization, and encouraging others to excel on their own while they strive to improve the organization.
Graduate Excellence in Mentoring Award
This award recognizes a graduate student who has exhibited exceptional mentorship of undergraduates and/or new graduate students in their assistantships. Moreover, the recipient is a graduate student who worked closely with others in research and/or other settings across the college.
